May I suggest that you all read? And often. Believe me, it’s nice to have something to talk about other than the weather and the Queen’s health. Your mind is not a cage. It’s a garden. And it requires cultivating.

Leaving any bookstore is hard, especially on a day in August, when the street outside burns and glares, and the books inside are cool and crisp to the touch; especially on a day in January, when the wind is blowing, the ice is treacherous, and the books inside seem to gather together in colorful warmth. It’s hard to leave a bookstore any day of the year, though, because a bookstore is one of the few places where all the cantankerous, conflicting, alluring voices of the world co-exist in peace and order and the avid reader is as free as a person can possibly be, because she is free to choose among them.

Dear Zainub,

I am currently writing my response for your review of the Alchemist.

I just wanted to let know what the status of my return post was.

- Hanaa

P.s. Your thoughts were woven together so eloquently.

#32: In Memoriam A.H.H by Alfred Lord Tennyson
Date Finished: 04/11/11
Dear Zainub,
Some stanzas were just as Tennyson called them, “The Way of the Soul”.
Arthur Henry Hallam, I’ve never met you but even I grieved your passing.
Aside from the discussion of evolution, I found much passion and unrestrained honesty buried in the crevasses of his words.

Dear Zainub,
Clarity comes when we realize that our time is severely limited.

#30: The Best American Travel Writing (2010) - Edited by Bill Buford
Date Finished: 04/06/11
Dear Zainub,
I read this anthology throughout the semester and since then I have concluded that I do indeed have a bad case of wanderlust.
Favourite destination? Siberian deserts of ice, need I say more.
Some mad respect for ‘the New Yorker’.

#29: The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephan R. Convey
Date Finished: 04/03/11
Dear Zainub,
Whilst reading, I simultaneously compared lessons I derived from this book to lessons the Qur’an and advice the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam) have already taught us.
The similarities are uncanny.

#28: On the Road by Jack Kerouac
Date Finished: 03/30/11
Dear Zainub,
He asserts my exact sentiments. He chimes in, “I like too many things and get all confused and hung-up running from one falling star to another till I drop.”
Sometimes living life can make one cynical.

#26: The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Date Finished: 03/24/11
Dear Zainub,
The Yellow Wallpaper = an epistolary novel featuring a woman’s decedent into unbridled insanity.
I loved reading of her triumphs over her husband, who consistently belittles her.
